ENTRANCE EXAMS FOR COLLEGE & MILITARY
ACT

The ACT will be given on the following dates for the 2016-2017 school year: September 10, October 22, December 10, February 11, April 8, and June 10. Loachapoka High School will be a test center for each test date except April. Be sure to enter our high school code (011-671) so that Mrs. Owen gets a copy of your scores for your permanent file. The first time you register, you will need to enter the classes you have taken, the grades you made in those classes, and the classes you plan to take. After you register the first time, you will only update the information that has changed. You will be able to check your scores online. YOU MUST UPLOAD A PHOTO BEFORE YOU CAN PRINT YOUR ADMISSION TICKET. See Mrs. Owen for registration information, a practice test booklet, and your transcript. A one-time fee waiver is available for those students on free or reduced school lunches. ASVAB

The ASVAB will be given at Loachapoka High School on November 10, 2016. There is no cost to take the ASVAB. Juniors and seniors may take the ASVAB. The results provide great information about what careers or college majors you may want to consider. You do NOT have to be planning for a military career to take the ASVAB. However, should you choose a military career, your ASVAB score determines what jobs you are offered in the military. See Mrs. Owen to register.

PSAT

Interested Juniors may register for the PSAT that will be administered at Loachapoka High School on Wednesday, October 19, 2016. The cost is $18.00. See Mrs. Owen before August 30, 2016 to register.

SAT

RURAL MINORITY HEALTH SCHOLARS PROGRAM--THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA

POSTED 12-15-16. FOR SENIORS ONLY. Deadline to submit applications to Mrs. Owen is February 22, 2017. The Rural Minority Health Scholars Program is open to all seniors who are interested in the medical field and possess at least a 3.0 GPA and a 20 ACT score (a 22 ACT score is preferred). You must have lived in rural Alabama for at least 5 years to apply. The program is a five-week summer program that includes tuition, room, and meals. There is no cost to attend if you are selected. ALABAMA GOLF ASSOCIATION WOMEN'S SCHOLARSHIP FUND

ALABAMA SCHOOL TRANSPORTATION ASSOCIATION (ASTA) CONFERENCE JOSEPH F. BEAMS SR./JR. EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP

You may apply if your parent has been employed as a bus mechanic in an Alabama public school transportation program for the past three years. You must have a 3.0 GPA to apply. An essay of 500 or less words is required. Three letters of verification are required: one from your parent's employer verifying employment; one from a teacher stating why the award should be made to you; and one from your counselor verifying your GPA, graduation date, and college you are planning to attend. POSTED 2-22-17. Deadline to submit the online application is April 1, 2017. The Alfa Foundation will award 100 scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each to students attending an Alabama college, university, or technical school in the Fall of 2017. You must have a minimum 2.5 GPA and have a current Alabama Farmers Federation membership issued in your name to apply. ARTS ASSOCIATION OF EAST ALABAMA

UPDATED 9-1-14. OPEN ONLY TO LEE COUNTY (ALABAMA) RESIDENTS WHO ATTEND A LEE COUNTY (ALABAMA) HIGH SCHOOL. Deadline to apply is April 29, 2015. Two different scholarships are available: The Giles-Peacock-Spann Scholarship and The Tom Woodward Visual Arts Scholarship. Three $1,000 Giles-Peacock-Spann scholarships are available. For the Giles-Peacock-Spann Scholarship, you must be planning to participate in an area of fine arts (voice, art, piano, brass, woodwind, percussion, string, drama, dance, or literary) at the college level and be willing to audition in that area for this scholarship. One $1,000 Tom Woodward Visual Arts scholarship is available. For the Tom Woodward Visual Arts scholarship, you must be planning to participate in any phase of the visual arts (drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, ceramics, or digital art) at the college level and be willing to submit and present five original works for the audition. AXA ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIP

UPDATED 9-10-16. Deadline to apply is December 15, 2016. ONLY THE FIRST 10,000 APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED. The AXA Achievement Foundation will award a $10,000 scholarship to 52 students and an additional $15,000 scholarship to 10 of those 52 students. A $2,500 scholarship will be awarded to 300 students. UPDATED 9-12-15. Applications are accepted from January 1, 2016 until April 1, 2016. Eleven scholarships will be awarded in the amount of $1,250 each. Any boy who has participated in Dixie Youth Baseball is encouraged to apply. Two letters of recommendation, a personal essay of less than 150 words, a photo, an ACT score, and a parent financial statement are required. DIXIE YOUTH BASEBALL SCHOLARSHIP

ELKS CLUB

UPDATED 9-12-15. Deadline to return applications to Mrs. Owen is November 26, 2015 to your local Elks Lodge. Locally, six scholarships in varying amounts from $500 to $10,000 will be awarded. Nationally, 500 scholarships will be awarded ranging from $4,000 to $50,000. You must have an ACT score to apply. You will need to include your employment, community service, honors and awards, and leadership activities on the application. A parental financial statement and student essay are also required. Exhibits (proof) of your activities and/or letters of recommendation can also be included. Your completed application is due to Mrs. Owen by November 26, 2015 in order to allow her time to prepare the counselor report and attach the other required information so that all documents can be submitted to the local Elks Club by the December 6, 2015 deadline. FFA SCHOLARSHIPS

Scholarships are available to students whose parent or guardian was a U.S. service member who (1) has become permanently disabled as a result of an operational mission or training accident; (2) was killed in action; or (3) is classified as a Prisoner of War or Missing in Action. UPDATED 11-8-13. Our school can submit one name of a graduating senior to be considered for a full scholarship at the University of Miami. The student must have at least a 3.75 GPA and be planning to attend the University of Miami in the fall of 2014. A counselor recommendation and a 500-word essay are required. Student must have strong participation in school and community activities and have overcome significant adversity. The scholarship pays for tuition, fees, room and board, and a $2,050 stipend per semester. The value is approximately $55,000 per year and is renewable for three additional years. UPWARD BOUND

NINTH, TENTH, AND *ELEVENTH* GRADE STUDENTS CAN APPLY. Upward Bound is a TRiO program managed by Tuskegee University for students planning to attend college. Applications are accepted for 9th and 10th grade students. *11th grade students can apply only up until the end of the 1st 9-weeks grading period of their 11th grade year. A minimum 2.5 GPA is required and priority is given to first generation and/or low-income students. Students will attend sessions on Tuskegee University's campus 2-3 Saturday's per month from 9:00-1:15.
